When a nonprofit can find a more effective way to ask for donations (and get them), it’s a big win. In early May, I attended a conference in Minneapolis focused on marketing and business. The conference is held once a year, and attendees learn about what’s working in the marketing industry. It’s a great place to pick up new ideas. One speaker, in particular, really caught my attention. He discussed a powerful marketing technique that I thought would work exceptionally well when applied to nonprofits. 

As promised, I will tell a social worker success story every month to balance out the problem solving tone of most of my blog posts. 

Social Service Agencies, both governmental and non-profit, are currently studying the productivity of their case workers. As caseloads increase and budgets restrict hiring, productivity is becoming topic number one. Agency management is desperately trying to isolate the working conditions that impede efficient workflow and demoralize an already overworked staff. 

“I Get No Respect I tell Ya… I Get No Respect” 

It seems that most people only think about social workers when the media runs another story about a child dying at the hands of their neglectful or abusive parents. Every time, the authorities are judged to have failed, the social worker is usually at the front of the queue as the blame is assigned. Although public services need to be held to account, these tragedies make easy headlines and it is too simplistic to always lay the fault at the foot of an individual social worker. 

Vast but Invisible

Nonprofit America is one of the least understood segments of national life, but one of the most crucial. Encompassing multi-million dollar health complexes and far larger numbers of small operations with annual budgets of less than $25,000, nonprofit organizations are a diverse collection of private institutions that mobilize individual initiative for the common good. They deliver much of the hospital care, higher education, social services, cultural entertainment, social welfare, and emergency aid services available in our country. They also give expression to a wide variety of artistic, religious, cultural, ethnic, social, and recreational impulses that add richness to community life. 

If You Have the Will, We Have the Way 

The National Association of Social Workers states emphatically that: 

Yes - you read that right... "Your Data Doesn't Matter!"

Well, actually - that is a half truth.  Of course your data does matter.  The point is when agencies and caseworkers are looking for new case management software - they focus mostly on their data... how it will be collected, what it will look like, how informative and actionable is the data and will it be helpful to your funders?
