Imagine how vulnerable it must feel to be utterly dependent on others to help you with even the most basic things. “Things aren’t what they used to be,” you think to yourself while waiting for the attendant to assist you in getting out of bed. You’re having trouble remembering your attendant’s name -- Kimberly? Bethany? You reflect on how unpleasant it is to have to rely on someone else to take you to the bathroom.

June 15th is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD). WEAAD was launched in 2006 by the World Health Organization and the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse to promote a better understanding of the abuse and neglect of older persons, including financial exploitation. The United Nations has acknowledged the significance of elder abuse as a public health and human rights issue.

Elder abuse can happen to rich and poor alike. It occurs in every demographic. It can happen in private homes and in nursing homes. Almost four out of five elder-abuse crimes are never discovered, it is estimated.

“Yes, things are not what they used to be,” you ponder again, mulling over that depressing idea while waiting for the attendant to finally arrive. When will she come? It’s been -- what? -- 45 minutes since you pressed the button that calls the nurses’ station? She always keeps you waiting, waiting, waiting! How would she like it if she had to wait 45 minutes to . . . Sometimes when you press the button she doesn’t even come at all. If she does arrive, she always has such an attitude! How much longer can you wait?
