What Single Thing Would Most Improve Your Work Life?

The British Association of Social Workers conducted a nationwide survey asking only the question, "What single thing would most improve your work life?" Here is a sample of the responses from rank and file caseworkers who remained anonymous to avoid recrimination.

  • Do direct work with children rather than case management and sign posting.
  • Casework often reduces the opportunity to embrace training.
  • What about a decrease in administration...endless administration.
  • Shorter, more client friendly paperwork would make the biggest difference.
  • Fit for purpose, fluid, intelligent IT systems would really reduce the burden of paperwork.
  • More qualified social workers.
  • Better quality, more experienced, less bullying management.
  • Good leadership and ownership of issues would address most problems.
  • Better strategic management
  • Management lacks transparency, integrity and follow-through
  • Reorganization in our department may help, and a new team approach.
  • A change in organizational culture
  • Respect
  • Being able to do social work rather than being an unqualified accountant
  • A period where change is not implemented, and we have a chance to come to terms with the last round of changes.
  • I am not concerned for myself in my training role, but I am concerned for new colleagues.

Sound familiar? Caseworkers, in both the government and non-profit sectors in every country in the world, struggle with similar issues. A solution begins with listening to the professionals on the firing line, then constantly reevaluating procedures, customs, traditions, technology, management skills, training, and the entire culture that has evolved in almost every agency.

FAMCare engineers are constantly trying to understand the core inefficiencies and redundancies confronting caseworkers.

  • How can we reduce record keeping tasks to a less significant portion of a caseworker's daily work load?
  • How can we get caseworkers out from behind their computer screens and back in front of their clients?

Every day at FAMCare begins with these two questions.
