In today’s world with the ever-changing technical offerings and social media giving us on the spot news sharing, it’s easy to stay continually distracted in both our personal and professional lives.

As an adopted person who was separated from my twin brother at one year of age, I especially have a strong commitment to this trend. Although, I could not have landed in a better household with very loving parents the entire process was certainly less structured than today’s process.

As a leader in your organization it is critical that you know that your vendors can hurt you more than your customers. It’s a fact that although you can somewhat control how your clients impact your operations it’s not possible to control your vendors if they are successful with their other customers. If you end up with a good vendor it’s imperative that you demonstrate trust in them and show appreciation when they go the extra mile.

Having been in technical sales almost my entire 30-year career, I was used to selling to a variety of industries.  Whether it was helping banks make more money using technology or helping the Department of Defense build fighter jets and other weapons equipment, I was always in it for the money and career reputation.

Often times because someone uses the word “software” to title a project it is easily assumed the IT department will be managing this effort.  If that person from IT does not understand the agency  from front to back and has plenty of subject matter expertise,  it’s a mistake to make them the project manager.

The software industry is still a relatively “young” industry- think car manufacturing, steel manufacturing etc. begun more than a hundred years ago versus software starting in the 50’s but only becoming widespread in the late 80’s/early 90's. There is also the creative side of software design that enters the picture. Because of this there are many temptations to have a homegrown system built just for your organization.
